The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aperture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aperture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shutter_speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exposure time<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Film_speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sensitivity<\/a> together determine the amount of light needed to achieve optimal exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human eye<\/a> the amount of light reaching the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Retina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retnia<\/a> is influenced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iris_(anatomy)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iris<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pupil\" target=\"_blank\" diaphragm blades that regulate the size of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aperture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aperture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iris_(anatomy)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iris<\/a> as being the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diaphragm_(optics)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diaphragm<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pupil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pupil<\/a> as being the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aperture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aperture<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure In the image above, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lens_speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lens speed<\/a> is 2.8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/F-number\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">f-number<\/a> is related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Focal_length\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focal length<\/a> you might find two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lens_speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lens speed<\/a> notations on a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoom_lens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zoom lens<\/a>. E.g. on a 35-105 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoom_lens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zoom lens<\/a> it might be 1:3.5-4.5. This means that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lens_speed\">lens speed<\/a> is 3.5 at 35 mm zoom and increases to 4.5 at 105 mm zoom.
