A wide angle lens<\/a> has a wide angle of view<\/a>, a large depth of field<\/a> range and exaggerates perspective<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wide angle of view of a wide angle lens shows a lot of the surroundings. This places the subject in context and gives the photography a feeling of wide open space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large Depth of Field Range<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The depth of field<\/a> range of a wide angle lens<\/a> ranges from close to the lens<\/a> to \u221e (infinity). All elements in the photograph are depicted sharp and in focus (unless they are very close to the lens). Therefore you will often find fixed wide angle lenses in compact cameras and mobile phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The depth of field<\/a> range depends both on the selected type of lens<\/a> and the selected aperture<\/a>. At equal distance between the camera and subject and at equal aperture<\/a>, a wide angle lens<\/a> has a much larger depth of field<\/a> than a tele lens<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wide Angle Lens Exaggerates Perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Objects seem to be further apart then they really are. This give a feeling of space. Image elements close to the lens seem extra large and elements far from the lens seem extra small. A normal lens has an angle of view comparable to the human eye<\/a>, an average depth of field<\/a> range and perspective<\/a> comparable with the human eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Normal Angle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The angle of view<\/a> of a normal lens<\/a> is similar to the angle of view<\/a> of the human eye<\/a>. A normal lens<\/a> has a focal length<\/a> (\n\n \n f<\/mi>\n <\/mrow>\n <\/mn>\n <\/math>) that is similar to the diagonal (\n \n d<\/mi>\n <\/mrow>\n <\/mn>\n <\/math>\n\t) of the light sensitive surface<\/a>, so \n \n f<\/mi>\n <\/mn>\n \u2248<\/mo>\n d<\/mi>\n <\/mn>\n <\/mrow>\n <\/math>. The diagonal of 24×36 mm (full-frame) is roughly 43.3 mm. The lens depicted above has a focal length of 45 mm. from \n\n \n 45<\/mi>\n <\/mn>\n \u2248<\/mo>\n 43,3<\/mi>\n <\/mn>\n <\/mrow>\n <\/math> \n follows that this a a normal lens. A tele lens has a small angle of view<\/a>, a limited depth of field<\/a> range and compresses the perspective<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four photographs below are taken with a zoom lens<\/a> with a variable focal length<\/a> ranging from 70 mm to 200 mm. As the focal length<\/a> increases, the angle of view<\/a> becomes smaller and the depth of field<\/a> reduces. The latter can be observed in the increase of blur in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tele lenses have a limited angle of view<\/a> that allow you to photograph subjects full screen at great distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The depth of field<\/a> range of a tele lens<\/a> is limited. For this photograph the focus is on the bassist. The violinist, singer and audience in front are outside the depth of field<\/a> range and become more blurred the further away they are from the bassist. The depth of field<\/a> range depends both on the selected type of lens<\/a> and the selected aperture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tele Lens Compresses Perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
