The photograph on the left has a high contrast due to the direct sunlight. This causes a very large difference between the light side and shadow side of the face. Because the eye sockets are slightly recessed shadows will quickly appear there. With the use of a portable folding reflector beneath refecting light from above the shadows become lighter. The contrast is controlled causing the eyes to become clearly visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevent High Contrast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several techniques to help control contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>location in shade<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cloudy day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>portable folding <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reflector_(photography)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reflector<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diffuser_(optics)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">difusser<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fill_flash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fill flash<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>studio photograpy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct and Indirect Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Direct light originates from a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_source#Light\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_source#Light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">point source<\/a> and causes bright light parts and dark shadows. Because of the high contrast this is often referred to as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hard_and_soft_light#Hard_light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hard Light<\/a>&#8220;. Flashes and light bulbs are considered to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_source#Light\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_source#Light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">point source<\/a>. As is the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indirect light is reflected and\/or refracted. Think light refected of a reflector, a location in the shade or daylight on an overcast day. Even a light gray gravelpath can be considered a refector. Is such situations where light comes from all directions, the contrast is low. The blacks also contains many different shades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"232\" height=\"154\" src=\"https:\/\/fotografeer.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_9388_detail.jpg\" alt=\"Detailed black\" class=\"wp-image-1537\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Forms of Contrast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Light and shadow is not the only form of contrast in photography. Another form is color contrast, e.g. red hair against a green background. Or contrast between focussed and blurred. Here the focus is on the eyes. Unsharpness (blur) increases the further away from this point. Note the hair going from sharp to slightly blurred.
