Isolate the Subject

An excess of elements in your frame leads attention away from your main subject. Therefore you can best leave out anything that doesn’t pertains to your subject. To achieve this, you usually have to move closer to your subject.

You can also isolate your subject by zooming in. Remember that the result of zooming differs from changing the distance. Read more in the post Perspective.

Taking Distance

Sometimes you need to move further away to be able to photograph the full subject. The flag poles and the sides of the building are missing from this picture. It would have been better to take a few steps back. Or to use and objective with a wider angle.
